Yum! I’m sharing a super easy recipe for homemade berry jam. Basically, I had some frozen berries in my freezer and I didn’t want to make another smoothie. The mix of berries I had contained raspberries, blackberries, cherries, strawberries, and red gooseberries.
I did some digging online and found that you can make jam with chia seeds. This actually makes perfect sense, because I know that when chia seeds are wet, they puff and make any liquid thick. Just like the chia pudding and chia pudding in flavors recipes, I shared on my blog, this yam is perfect for an overnight breakfast.
Making jam with chia seeds is a quick and healthier solution when you want to have a jam. First of all, you control the sweetness of the jam. The sweetness in this recipe comes from maple syrup or the honey you add to the berries. That's it, no massive amount of sugar like in other homemade jam recipes. I added 2 tablespoons of maple syrup. I still wanted to taste the berry flavor which is a bit tarter. Don’t forget you can always add more later if you want it sweeter.
Second, it is not a long process of cooking, you only need to let the berries thaw, blend them and add the chia seeds - less than 10 minutes of work! I used my blender to mash the berries because it is quicker, you can also use a fork and do it by hand. You control the texture and if you want more whole fruits then don’t mash it all.
And third, chia seeds are full of nutrients. They are considered a good source of omega 3 fatty acids and are rich with antioxidants. So for sure, it is a healthier jam than other types of jams that don’t contain chia seeds.
The recipe is so simple it only calls for 3 ingredients. You can make this chia jam with only raspberries or only blackberries, etc. I had the frozen mix so I used it as it is. I don’t think this recipe will work with other types of fruits that aren't berries.
The jam is ready to eat when you finish mixing, the longer it sits, the more thicker it gets.
You can add this yummy berry chia jam to any dish you want to like your granola bowl or on your Challah French toast, on homemade ice cream, or you can mix it in your chia seed pudding for extra flavor - YUM!
