Summer has moved on finally and fall is coming up! September is usually a time of new beginnings and also the Jewish New Year. One of the symbols of this holiday is apple with honey that you eat for a sweet year. Last year I shared my mom's recipe for honey cake if you need a dessert for the holiday, you should try it!

Besides the holiday, kids start school again after summer vacation and they need to get back to a regular routine. To try to stay healthy with school sandwiches I have brought you a recipe for spelt buns. The spelt flour is better than wheat flour when considering healthy bread. These spelt buns are made with wheat flour as well but the spelt flour in them makes them better than regular buns. I stopped buying bread a few years ago when I realized how easy it is to make homemade bread and buns. Trust me, making your own bread isn't as hard as it sounds! And it is far healthier to make your own. When making your own bread you know exactly what it contains and you have control over your health. When it comes to your kids, you want to give them the best and homemade buns are the best.

Easy Bun Recipe

These buns are perfect as breakfast too or for dinner with a bowl of soup or a salad.

If you want to go wild (and your kid will approve) I also shared last year a recipe for beet buns, which have a unique color and taste.

Here is the recipe for these easy spelt buns:

School Sandwich Ideas

  • 1½ cups of lukewarm water
  • 1 tablespoon of dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of whole spelt flour
  • 2 cups of flour

  1. In the mixer bowl place, the water, dry yeast and sugar, mix well and let it sit for 10 minutes until you see small bubbles and the yeast starts working.
  2. Attach the kneading hook and add olive oil, flours and salt and knead for 5 minutes.
  3. Grease the bowl with more olive oil and let the dough rise for an hour or until it doubles in size. Make sure the dough is covered with oil completely.
  4. Divide the dough to 16 small balls and roll each one of them to a tight ball. Place the buns on a baking pan lined with baking paper. Let the buns rest for 15 minutes.
  5. Set the oven to 200°C/ 400°F fan.
  6. When the 15 minutes are over, bake the buns for 20 minutes until lightly golden.
  7. Cool the buns at room temperature.
  8. Have a bun and happy new year!
