September is here! Fall will officially start soon too and it's time to indulge the season with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Apples are one of the fruits of this season and are also one of the symbols of Rosh Hashanah. Instead of another apple cake recipe, this time I am sharing an individual dessert that is quick and rather easy to make. With only 5 ingredients, you can whip these baked apple pie rolls (or turnovers) and impress your guests and family.

In fact I like to consider this recipe a Sukkot recipe since there is a habit of having stuffed or filled foods in Sukkot. Filled foods symbolize the bounty of the harvest. Sukkot symbols aren’t edible and there is no dedicated dishes particularly to this holiday. Each family makes their own festive food however they like. Usually its challah, kugel, salads, some protein and of course, desserts. The food on this holiday is special since we have it outside of the house in the sukkah.

These baked rolls are made with rice paper. I found colorful rice paper while shopping and thought it's cute and adds festivity to the dish. These rice papers are colored with natural food colors of brown rice, beets and turmeric. The flavor is the same as the white ones, the natural colors doesn’t add any flavor. Therefore regular white rice paper works the same and fit the recipe too. With rice paper as the turnover "dough" the dish is gluten free. If you don’t mind having gluten then you can also make these rolls with phyllo sheets or puff pastry.

To make these apple pie rolls or turnovers you will need rice paper, apples, cinnamon, sugar and some vegetable oil. For garnish I used pomegranate seeds and I also drizzled the rolls with honey. If you switch the honey with maple syrup the recipe will be vegan. Another garnish option is to sprinkle powdered sugar.

The process of making the rolls start with cooking the apple pie filling shortly and letting it cool. Then you dip rice paper in water to make it soft and ready to be filled. Place the filling in a line and close the 2 sides of the paper on the filling and roll. Continue like that for all the rolls you are making. Place all the rolled rolls on a pan, brush with vegetable oil and bake for 15-20 minutes. Garnish as you wish and enjoy the crunchy bite.

The rolls are perfect as a small individual dessert. You can make the filling in advance and keep in the fridge ready to use. You can serve the baked rolls to the table with some options of garnish like cut fruits, powdered sugar, honey or even ice cream or sorbet and let each guest garnish as they wish.
