What is white sangria
The main, if not the only, thing I like about summer is the fresh and sweet summer fruits. Sweet and delicious fresh fruits like nectarine, berries, and many more. Adding fruits to any dish can upgrade the flavor and create something interesting for your taste buds. So here is a real treat for this heatwave, summer fruit sangria drink!
Sangria is originally made with red wine but during summer it's too heavy and you just crave something light and refreshing. White wine sangria is usually served cold so that's perfect!
How to make white sangria
Whipping up cold sangria is easier than hot sangria since you don’t need to cook it and worry about losing the alcohol in the drink. Just mix everything and place it in the fridge or add ice cubes if you want to have it right away.
The base of my sangria is semi-dry white wine. However, use the type you like as this is the main flavor of the drink.
What fruits go in sangria
Hot sangria is usually made with apples, citrus fruits and warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, and anise stars. During summer we don’t need that, just sweet fresh summer fruits. Any fruit that you like would work, I added nectarine, blueberries, and pitted cherries - white and dark ones.
You can choose to sweeten the drink with maple syrup or honey. Or you can have it unsweetened. Another optional ingredient is white rum if you prefer the drink to be even more alcoholic.
To finish the drink, I added sparkling water, if you want you can use Sprite as well. This easy summer fruit sangria can be your drink for a picnic or during your weekend brunch. If you want it as a festive patriotic drink for Independence Day this weekend then you can use watermelon and blueberries only. With the white wine, you will get a blue, white and red drink. It can go well with my patriotic vegan coconut treats.
Tips to enhance your white sangria experience during the summer:
Choose a light and crisp white wine
Opt for white wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Riesling, as they offer refreshing and citrusy flavors that pair well with the fruit in the sangria.
Experiment with fruits
Get creative with the fruits you add to your white sangria. Strawberries, peaches, nectarines, lemons, limes, and pineapples are all excellent choices. Choose fruits that are in season for the best flavor.
Muddle the fruit
Gently muddle some of the fruit slices in the pitcher before adding the wine and other ingredients. This will release their juices and enhance the fruity flavors in the sangria.
Sweeten to taste
Adjust the amount of sugar or sweetener based on your preference. Taste the sangria as you add the sugar, and remember that the fruit will also contribute natural sweetness.
Chill before serving
Allow the sangria to chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and makes for a refreshing, cool beverage.
Add a splash of rum
If you prefer a little extra kick, include a splash of white rum in your white sangria. It adds a subtle tropical note that complements the fruity flavors.
Serve with ice and garnish
Serve the sangria over ice cubes in individual glasses to keep it cool. Garnish each glass with a slice of fruit or a sprig of mint for an added touch of elegance.
Get creative with herbs
Experiment with adding fresh herbs like mint, basil, or rosemary to your white sangria. They can add a delightful aromatic twist to the drink.
Use a clear pitcher or glassware
Showcase the colorful fruits and vibrant hues of the sangria by using a clear pitcher or glassware. It adds to the visual appeal of the drink.
Offer non-alcoholic options
Consider providing a non-alcoholic version of white sangria by substituting the wine with white grape juice or a non-alcoholic white wine alternative. This ensures that everyone can enjoy the refreshing flavors, including those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages.
