    What is beer bread?

Beer bread is a type of quick bread that uses beer in the recipe. The beer adds flavor and acts as a leavening agent, which helps the dough to rise. Beer bread can be served sweet or savory, depending on the ingredients you choose to add!

I first baked this recipe when I met a special man who later became my husband. He only had a beer in his fridge, much like most single men, and I wanted to make us dinner. With one can of beer, flour, and some salt, bam! You've got your hands on delicious homemade bread.

Needless to say, my date was surprised, and I can only imagine your friends and family will be too.

    Beer bread with self-rising flour

I never use self-rising flour because I always make sure to have baking powder and plain flour. That’s right, that’s the only difference between regular flour and self-rising flour! If you see a recipe that calls for self-rising flour and you do not have any, just use plain flour and add baking powder.

Therefore, if you only have self-rising flour then you can use it in this recipe and omit the baking powder, it works both ways.

The recipe yields 1 loaf, although you can double the ingredients and make 2 if you want. You will need to use a loaf pan for baking the bread.

Tips for making the best beer bread recipe

Now that I have you convinced to give beer bread a try, here are some tips for making the best beer bread recipe:

    Choose the right beer

You can use any type of beer you like but opt for a lager or pale ale for a light, mellow flavor. Try a stout or porter if you'd like something more intense in flavor.

    Don't add too much beer

The amount of beer you use should equal the amount of flour. Too much beer will make your bread sticky, while not enough won't allow it to rise properly.

Add herbs and spices for flavor

You can customize this beer bread recipe with your favorite herbs and spices. For example, try rosemary, oregano, or garlic powder for a classic flavor combination.

Let the beer bread cool before slicing

Allow the beer bread to cool completely before slicing and serving. This will help it stay in one piece so you can enjoy nice, neat slices of fresh beer bread.

    FAQs

What beer is best for beer bread?

There is no single beer that works best for beer bread. It all depends on what type of flavor you're looking for! Try using an ale or a lager for a classic, nutty flavor. If you want something sweeter, opt for a stout or porter. Or, if you'd like to experiment, why not try a wheat beer or a sour beer?
The beer you pick is pivotal to the flavor, so make sure it's something that appeals to your palate. So I went with Carlsberg, but feel free to select a different brew!

Do I have to use beer for this recipe?

Yes, you need to use beer to make this recipe. Beer adds flavor and helps activate the dough, giving your bread an impressive rise. If you don't want to use alcohol, you could try using a non-alcoholic beer or a carbonated beverage like Sprite or Ginger Ale.

Can I add other ingredients to this beer bread recipe?

You can certainly jazz up your beer bread with additional flavorings and toppings. Try adding some herbs and spices for extra flavor. Or top it off with cheese, olives, nuts, seeds, or other savory toppings. The possibilities are endless!
I used walnuts, sesame seeds, and flax seeds.

How many bread loaves can I get with this recipe?

This recipe should yield one large loaf of beer bread. You can divide the dough into two smaller loaves if you'd like. You can also double the recipe and make two large loaves instead.

What to serve with beer bread?

Beer bread is a great accompaniment to any meal. Pair it with some cheese slices, dips such as edamame or lentil, and your favorite spread condiments for a delicious snack.

How do I properly store these beer bread loaves to enjoy later?

For best results, store your beer bread loaf in an airtight container at room temperature, and it should last for up to 3-4 days.

Can I freeze this beer bread?

Yes, you can freeze beer bread. After baking the loaf, let it cool completely before wrapping it in an airtight container or plastic wrap. It should keep for up to 3 months in the freezer. When you're ready to eat, thaw and enjoy!
