Mangoes, with their luscious sweetness and vibrant colors, are a true gift of nature. Enjoying this tropical fruit in its sliced form is not only visually appealing but also makes for a refreshing and nutritious treat. If you've ever struggled or wondered hot to cut a mango efficiently while preserving its succulent flesh, worry not! In this step-by-step guide, I'll walk you through the art of cutting mango slices like a pro.

    Mango Fruit

The roots of my fondness for mangoes trace back to the mango trees in my parents' backyard. With those magnificent trees gracing our home, every summer became a cherished opportunity to revel in the pure delight of indulging in these lusciously sweet fruits. Previously on this blog, I've had the pleasure of sharing a couple of delectable recipes: one for delightful mango dessert cups and another for a mouthwatering mango crisp. Both of these recipes are incredibly scrumptious and definitely deserve a spot on your must-try list.

    How to pick mango

Selecting a ripe mango is crucial for a delicious outcome. Look for a mango that yields slightly to gentle pressure when squeezed. The skin should be mostly smooth, with a fragrant aroma around the stem. Color alone isn't always an indicator of ripeness, as different mango varieties have varying hues. A slight blush or yellow undertone is often a sign of maturity.

    Sniff the Aroma

The aroma of a mango can be a telltale sign of its ripeness and flavor. Lift the mango to your nose and take a whiff – a sweet, fruity scent near the stem suggests that the fruit is ready to eat. If there's no aroma or the scent is faint, the mango may need more time to ripen.

    Gather Your Tools

To achieve clean and uniform mango slices, you'll need a few basic tools:

    • A sharp knife: A sharp knife will make the slicing process easier and prevent unnecessary bruising.
    • Cutting board: Choose a sturdy cutting board or a plate with a stable surface.
    • Peeler: To remove the skin before slicing. While alternative mango-cutting techniques often skip the peeling step, it's crucial to emphasize that peeling is essential when aiming for beautifully presented, ready-to-eat mango slices.

Step by Step guide for perfect Mango Slices

    1. Prepare the Mango

Completely peel the mango using a peeler. For added ease in cutting, consider removing a small portion from the stem area. This will allow the mango to stand securely as you separate the flesh from the seed.

    2. Cutting cheeks

    • Stand the mango upright on your cutting board.
    • Using a sharp knife, make a vertical cut slightly off-center, avoiding the large pit in the center. This cut will determine the side of the mango where the pit lies.
    • Repeat the same cut on the opposite side of the pit, creating two large mango halves or as I like to call them cheeks.

    3. Make nice slices

Place one mango half flat-side down on the cutting board and slice it horizontally into thin slices. Repeat with the other half and arrange slices on a platter to serve.

    Enjoy the Slices

Once you have a pile of succulent mango slices, they're ready to be enjoyed! You can savor them as a snack, add them to salads, blend them into smoothies, or use them to garnish desserts.

    Other methods of cutting Mango

While there are indeed alternative methods to cut mangoes, such as leaving the peel on to create a 'hedgehog' effect, my personal preference leans towards the cleaner and more refined approach of peeling and slicing. While the 'hedgehog' method can have its visual appeal, I find that peeling the mango and delicately slicing it not only maintains the fruit's pristine appearance but also allows for a neater and more enjoyable eating experience. The simplicity of sliced mangoes perfectly captures their juicy essence, making them an irresistible treat.
