    matcha powder

    What is matcha?

Matcha is a type of green tea powder that has been used in traditional Japanese culture for centuries. It’s made from whole green tea leaves ground into a fine powder, and it has a unique flavor that adds an interesting twist to desserts.

It tastes like a mix of earthy flavors with subtle sweetness—perfect for adding a fun flavor to baked goods. Plus, its vibrant green color adds a unique way to make your sweets look extra special.

Tips for making the best matcha cookies

Here are some of the best tips for making these white chocolate chip matcha cookies...

    Use brown butter

Instead of just melting your butter, try using brown butter. Browning the butter adds a nutty flavor to the cookies and helps bring out more of the flavors in the matcha powder.

To make brown butter, simply heat the butter until it turns a golden brown color - this should take about 5 minutes or so. Be sure to stir it often while it's cooking so that it doesn't burn. Note that using brown butter will make the outcome cookies darker and not so light green colored.

    Chill dough

Chilling the cookie dough before baking helps keep your cookies from spreading too much in the oven. It also gives them more flavor and texture, as chilling the dough helps to develop more of the flavors. Aim for about 60 minutes in the refrigerator before baking.

    Don’t overmix

Make sure that you don't overmix your dough when you're combining all of the ingredients together; this can cause your cookies to become tough and chewy instead of light and fluffy.

Once all of the ingredients have been added to the bowl, mix them together until they're just combined, and then stop mixing.

    FAQs

Here are some questions people often ask about how to make these sweet matcha green tea cookies...

Can I use any matcha powder for baking?

Yes, you can use any matcha powder for this recipe; however, it’s best to use a higher-quality variety. Matcha can vary in quality and flavor depending on how it is processed and where it was sourced from.

The better the quality of the matcha, the better your cookies will taste!

Do I have to add white chocolate chips?

No, you don’t have to add chocolate chips. However, they do add a delicious sweetness and texture that really completes the cookie. I personally love what the white chocolate adds to the matcha cookie recipe!
You can also try adding dark chocolate chips or other ingredients like dried fruit or nuts for a fun twist.

Can I make these matcha cookies gluten-free?

Yes, you can easily make this recipe gluten-free. To do so, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free 1:1 flour of your choice.

Note: The texture may be slightly different than with all-purpose flour, but the flavor should still be yummy.
